Works great, construction quality so-so

By Charlie Stillman

from s/v Gratitude, Seattle, WA

Pros

  • Clever
  • Convenient

Cons

  • Part fell out
  • Poorly constructed

Best Uses

The spring, used to snap the gate closed, is held in place by two plastic plugs which are inserted from the two ends of the mounting shaft. One of the plugs fell out the fourth time I used the device. The other one could be easily plucked out with fingernails. This is shockingly poor construction for a [$] product.I don't know why they didn't use a bolt and nut or a rivet, or at least glue the plugs in place. I temporarily replaced the missing plug with a #6 self-tapping screw. Since then, I've inserted a stainless cotter pin to replace both plugs. I've defanged the ends by coating them with silicone seal. I'll probably get a #4 stainless bolt and nut eventually.I would give this a one star rating if the hooker didn't work so well. It picks up the mooring ball with no fuss and without needing to hang upside down over the toerail.I'm not optimistic for the long haul. I think it is likely that something will break unless I'm ultra careful. I talked with another boat owner who one some years ago that was probably the same product. It broke on the first use. I'm tempted to rename this the "Hapless Hooker" except that I will keep using it rather than return it.I hope the manufacturer can be encouraged to offer a more robust version at the same price.

Wish I had implemented it sooner.

    Pros

    • Works perfectly

    Cons

    • none

    Best Uses

    • Mooring to Buoys

My Admiral handles the deck lines. Hooking up to a mooring buoy from the stern and walking lines forward can be difficult and dangerous, especially in winds and current. This product eliminates all of that. We hook a messenger line to the Happy Hooker, which we have attached to a telescoping pole. She simply stabs the Happy Hooker through the eye on the buoy and easily pulls the line through the buoy by retracting the pole. Then she pulls the messenger and larger line through effortlessly. All of this from a stable and safe point on the bow of the vessel.
It is not a gimmick and well worth the price.
    I highly recommend this product.
